In the coming years, Spain faces a historic crossroads. On the one hand, it is presented with an apparently easy path, that of statism and populism, the Hispanic road to underdevelopment followed by Venezuela and Argentina, which Spain has always been tempted to take. On the other hand, there is a path that requires major changes in the short term, but which can make the economy and society more productive. Choosing the second path involves reforms in at least three priority areas: education, to make it less rote and more focused on analytical aspects; economic institutions, to ensure a much more transparent market; and political institutions, to increase the quality of our elites and make them truly accountable to citizens. In this book, the economist and professor at the London School of Economics Luis Garicano is firmly committed to this second path, based on investment in human capital, in-depth reform of the State and the justice system, and mandatory compliance with the rules, and proposes a feasible vision of what Spain needs to do to get out of the morass in which it finds itself.

Luis Garicano (Valladolid, 1967) is Professor of Economics and Strategy in the Departments of Business Administration and Economics at the London School of Economics. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Chicago, where he has spent most of his teaching and research career. His areas of research are productivity growth, new technologies and work organization. He has been a visiting professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the London Business School, among other academic institutions, and in 2007 received the Banco Herrero Foundation Award for the best Spanish researcher under the age of 40 in the fields of economic, business and social knowledge. He was founder of the economic blog Nada es gratis, and co-author of the book of the same name.
